This letter box is decorated with paulownia motifs over a pearskin base. “Pearskin” is the term given to the makie technique in which lacquer is applied to a base sprinkled with gold dust, resulting in an appearance similar to that of the skin of a pear. The rings located on the sides of the letter box are made of gilt copper and are also decorated with paulownia patterns. The paulownia motif was commonly used on furniture, clothes, and many other crafts. Its popularity stems form the paulownia seals that Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536-98) presented to his men for meritorious service. Originally, a seal with this motif was first given to Hideyoshi by the imperial household.
