This is a calligraphic rendition of the ‘Autumn Songs’ from Volume 4 of the Shin Kokin Wakashu, or the New Collection of Ancient and Modern Poems on paper whose entire surface is dusted with mica powder. It was originally a part of a scroll and corresponds to the “Yukai-gire, detached segment from scroll, suibara (suihara) paper (produced in Suibara Valley in Harima, Hyogo prefecture), from Shin-Kokin Wakashu, 2-line poem” described in the Newly Selected Collection of Ancient Calligraphic Masterpieces. It is attributed to Fujiwara-no-Ietaka (1158-1237), but when compared with Ietaka’s authentic work in the Kumano kaishi, it is doubtful if this detached segment was really rendered by him. The heavy and sturdy lines using dark Indian ink show the calligraphic style of priest Jakuren (1139?-1202) of the early 13th century. Although the origin of the segment name is not clear, it could be attributed to the Priest Yukai (years of birth and death unknown), who originally owned the fragment.
