徳力善雪〈とくりきぜんせつ・1599-1680〉は、江戸時代前期の画家。名は之勝、明暦2年〈1656〉に剃髪して法名を善雪と号した。父・三好壱岐守善宗のあとを継いで、京都・西本願寺絵所となる。以後、徳力家代々がこの職を世襲する。善雪の画系については、狩野山雪門人説のほか、狩野探幽の門人と伝える説もある。西本願寺御影堂障壁画の制作や「親鸞聖人絵伝」（８幅・西本願寺蔵＝寛文３年〈1663〉）・「瀟湘八景図巻」などの作品が知られる。本図は、西王母の上半身像を描いたもの。西王母は、中国の西方にある昆崙山に住む神女で、「山海経」（中国古代の地理書）には、人間の女の顔をして獣の体、蓬髪・虎牙・豹尾の姿であるという。
