This is a fragment from the WakanRoeishu (the Anthology of Japanese and Chinese Poems for Recitation), which originally consisted of two huge scrolls comprising Volume 1 and Volume 2 characterized by an intermixed use of decorated karakami paper of miscellaneous patterns. The karakami paper was made in the North Sung in 11thcentury- China by applying white mica dust on paper undercoated with white pigment with imprints of arabesque patterns. Much of the decoration, however, has worn off. Only two other segments from the original scrolls have survived to this day. This segment contains only two lines of poetry, but is quite valuable. The poem was composed by Sugawara-no-Fumitoki (899-981), who was the grandson of Sugawara-no-Michizane.The calligraphy is said to have been in Fujiwara-no-Yukinari’s (also Kozei, 972-1027) hand, but compared with Yukinari’s authentic works, the style shown here is clearly executed by a different person. The bold and dashing style speaking of spirits vividly portrays the calligraphy style of the era, and is certain to have been produced by one of the representative calligraphy masters of the mid-11th century.
