大田垣蓮月〈おおたがきれんげつ・1791-1875〉は、江戸時代末期の女流歌人。生後ほどなくして京都の太田垣伴左衛門光古の養女となる。名は誠。夫・子供につぎつぎに先立たれるという不幸が続き、33歳で落飾、蓮月と名を改め仏門に入った。やがて、生活のために茶器を焼き始める。自らの詠んだ歌を釘で彫り加えた素朴な焼き物は、蓮月焼と呼ばれて大評判を得た。60歳ころに聖護院村に転居、隣家の法衣商十一屋富岡家の二男猷輔少年、のちの鉄斎〈てっさい・1837-1924〉が彼女の身辺の世話をした。蓮月の謙虚で慈悲深い人柄や生きざまは、鉄斎の人格形成に多大の影響を及ぼしたといわれる。
