『臨済録』の「行録」に臨済義玄とその師・黄檗希運の問答がいくつか収録される。深山に松を栽えて何になる、との黄檗の問に、臨済は、「松を栽えても一代で伐採できるものではなく、後代の誰かが収穫するもので、後人の標榜とするもの」と言って、鍬を地に３度打ってその自信を示した。そこで、黄檗は、自らの仏法が臨済によって確実に継承されたことを確認したという。すなわち、弟子が師を凌ぐ力量がないと、仏法は本当に伝承されたとはいえないことを示す。本図は、このときの臨済の姿をあらわした図様「臨済栽松図」である。鍬の柄を両手でしっかと持って鍬先を地面に押し当てる。得意然とした臨済の表情がじつに面白い。画賛の筆者別伝妙胤〈？－1347〉は、南北朝時代の臨済宗雪岩派の僧。早くに入元して、のちに来朝した清拙正澄・古林清茂らに参禅、元徳元年〈1329〉に明極楚俊・竺仙梵遷・雪村友梅らが来朝する船に同船して帰朝を果たしたという。その後、上杉氏の招きで鎌倉・報国寺に住し、さらに浄智寺に移り、貞和２年〈1346〉には京都・建仁寺の31世となったが、翌年死去した。中国元代の書法を思わせる結構・書風である。
