阿弥陀如来の夢のお告げを得て、一人の念仏往生が衆人の念仏往生を約束すると説く融通念仏宗の開祖良忍上人〈りょうにん・1073-1132〉の伝記事跡を中心にしながら、融通念仏弘通の歴史を描いたのが「融通念仏縁起絵巻」である。原本は正和３年〈1314〉の成立で、米国のシカゴ美術館蔵本（上巻）・クリーブランド美術館蔵本（下巻）が、現存最古の遺品として知られ、鎌倉末期（14世紀）の制作とされる。良忍の没後、鎌倉時代末期になって、良鎮（りょうちん・1382～1423生存確認）が出て、この宗を再興、熱心な勧進によって、「融通念仏縁起絵巻」がさかんに制作された。
