The raw torinoko paper (eggshell colored paper) was treated with mica powder for elegant appearance on which poetry from Manyoshu (‘Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves’ or ‘Collection of a Myriad of Leaves’) was then calligraphed. The Kyoto University Library possesses a partial collection of Volume 16, while Volume 12 is possessed by various families as detached segments. The name of this segment, Amagasaki-gire, derives from the rich merchant of Amagasaki in Settsu (today’s Hyogo Prefecture) who had owned it.The calligraphy is attributed to Minamono-no-Toshiyori (1055-1129), but without verification. The stroke is characterized by sokuhitsu, or the use of the slanted body of the bristles to create thick lines, and the obvious speed. Based on the decorative technique of the paper and stroke characteristics, this calligraphy is presumed to have been made between the late 11th century and the early 12th century of the Heian Period. It has a historical and literary importance as a manuscript of Manyoshu rendered during the Heian Period. Errors and omissions in the original writing are corrected (by either red or black ink) by a different hand.
不相念公者雖座自恋丹吾者衣恋君之光儀あひおもはずきみはませどもかたこひにわれはぞコふるきみがすがたを味沢相目者非不飽携不問事毛苦労有来（あぢさはふめはあかざらねたづさはりことどはなくもくるしかりけり）璞之年緒永何時左右鹿我恋将居寿不知而あらたまのとしのをながくいつまでかわがこひをらむいのチしらずて
