A segment from the Gosen Wakasyu (Later selection of Japanese Poetry) also known as ‘Higashiyama-gire’. The handwritten calligraphy is rendered on raw torinoko paper with no decoration. Originally, it was a part of a thread-stitched bound volume. The handwriting is attributed to Minbukyo-no-Tsubone, the daughter of Fujiwara-no-Sadaie (1162-1241) but without verification. The small and uniform letter size and the delicate flowing style are characteristic of a feminine hand.Even though the origin of the segment name of ‘Akishino-gire’ cannot be identified, it reminds one of the Akishino Temple of Nara. The name ‘Higashiyama-gire’ is attributed to the discovery of this segment in Higashiyama, Kyoto, immediately after the end of the Second World War. It was then segmented by an art dealer, and so named by the historian Dr. Nakamura Naokatsu (1890-1976).
