左大臣藤原時平の讒訴によって、配所の筑紫国（福岡県）太宰府に左遷、同地で不遇の死を遂げた菅原道真〈すがわらのみちざね・845-903〉の怨霊を鎮めるためにおこった天神信仰は、長い歴史の中で多くの絵画遺品を生み出した。天神画像は、礼拝像として描かれた道真の絵姿で、その形式は、束帯天神（笏を手に帯剣した文官の正装である束帯姿で描かれるもの）と、渡唐天神（冠をつけ中国の道服姿で梅の一枝を手挟んで立つもの）とに大きく二分できるが、典拠とした説話や、背景となった天神信仰の性格の変容などによって、さまざまなヴァリエーションがある。本図は、繧繝縁の上畳に坐し、両手で笏を握る典型的な束帯天神像。背後に太い松樹を描き、枝越しに梅枝が見え隠れする。松は道真の化身ともいい、梅は「東風吹かば」の歌や飛梅伝説など道真とは切ってもきれない関係にある。大幅の画面からはみ出すほどに画像を強調、松樹も大胆に描く。力量ある絵師（不明）の作品である。
