This is a segment from the Reika-Shu (lit.‘collection of beautiful flower Poems’), a private anthology compiled during the Heian Period, originally containing 10 volumes. Paper fiber was dyed using brewed dried clove buds for fragrance and insect-repellent purposes, therefore the name of this fragment, koushi, which means ‘fragrant paper’. A flowing and dynamic hand stands clearly against the yellowish paper with a reddish hue. This fragment was originally bound in a detchoso style of paste-bound pages.Reika-Shu is a collection of poems referred to as ‘a collection of beautiful flower poems’ in the preface of the Goshui Wakashu, or the Later Collection of Gleanings of Japanese Poetry, but today there are no extant manuscripts in its complete form, most of which being lost or scattered. The present Koushi-gire and the Yawata-gire, known to be executed by Ono-no-Michikaze (also Tofu), are the sole extant segments. The calligraphy is attributed to Lady Koo-Gimi (also Kodai-no-Kimi, years of birth and death unknown), one of the 36 immortal masters of Japanese poetry, but without verification. This calligraphy manuscript dates back to the later half of the 11th century and is characterized by the use of anomalous Japanese syllabus and katakana Japanese, particularly those of ‘mi’, ‘ru’, ‘ha’ and ‘wo’.
君こふとかつはきえつゝふるほどにかくてもいける身とやミル覧人の見えはべらざりければ人丸我こそハにくゝもあらめ我やどのハなのさかりは(ヲ)見にハこじとや
『麗花集』は一条天皇代(986ー1011)成立の私撰和歌集で、完本は現存せず、2種の古筆切が伝わるのみです。丁子(クローブ)で染めた茶色の紙の使用から「香紙切」と呼ばれるこの切は、90葉程が確認され、小大君(10世紀後半ー11世紀初)や藤原公任(966ー1041)筆と鑑定されています。行線が垂直でなく、連綿がきつい筆先の鋭い動きに、平安時代の特徴がみえます。糊を使用する粘葉装の断簡ですが、右端に綴穴も確認できます。no.13内の古筆本家旧蔵の『増補古筆名葉集』の小大君項には、「四半 竪長シ古今哥二行書」とある「四半」の右に、朱筆で「香紙切」と書き込まれており、『古筆類葉集』(no.12)では「柿色紙」と呼んでいます。古筆家6代了音(1674ー1725)の極札が附属します。切の繊細さに合わせた表装の特殊なデザインも見どころです。(佐々木)
