A calligraphy segment from the Senzai Wakashu (Anthology of Japanese Poems of a Thousand Years) Volume 16 ‘Miscellaneous Songs’, which was originally crafted in a thread-stitched volume form. The Anthology of Japanese Poems of a Thousand Years was compiled by Fujiwara-no-Toshinari (also Shunzei, 1114-1204), one of the most representative poets of the late Heian Period, upon imperial command from the Retired Emperor Goshirakawa (1127-92). It was in September 1187 according to the preface of this anthology but on April 22 of 1188, according to Meigetsuki (Clear Moon Journal), the diary of Fujiwara-no-sadaie (also Teika, 1162-1241). He wrote that Toshinari rendered a clean copy to present to the emperor. At the time, Toshinari was 75-years-old and had entered the priesthood. Therefore, this was the first imperial anthology compiled by someone retired into priesthood. The original scroll dedicated to the emperor was known to consist of joined white-finished paper with a red sandalwood roll and a front cover made of thin, silk fabric. The ‘Hino-gire’ shown here is different from the imperial scroll, nevertheless, of priceless nature as it shows authentic calligraphy by the compiler. The characteristic lines with slight queerness proudly speak of Toshinari’s great achievements and the longevity he enjoyed. The segment name may be attributed to the noble Hino family wherein this calligraphy masterpiece descended.
