仏・菩薩・天・明王など諸尊の姿形・印相を線描した画像を集成した図像集は、仏像彫刻や仏画のよりどころとして重要な役目を果たす。もともと、インドや西域などから中国・日本に仏教が伝来する際に、仏像の像容を伝える手段として発達したもので、とくに密教では、その奥義を師資相承する場合に、経典・典籍・文書などと並んで法流の証明として伝承された。現在では作例の伝わらない尊像も収められており、仏教美術研究の上で、不可欠の資料として重宝される。平安時代後期（12世紀初）になって、図像の研究が進み、さまざまな図像集が編纂された。仁和寺の恵什編纂の『図像抄』（10巻本）は、その最古の図像集として有名である。のちに編まれる『別尊雑記』（57巻）・『覚禅抄』（120余巻）・『阿娑縛抄』（227巻）などの規範となっている。この残巻は、記載の内容から図像集の一部にちがいないが、図像ならびに本文が以上の諸書と合致しない。あるいは別種の伝本であろうか。
