大きな袋を逆さにして、その上に腰を下ろす布袋の姿を描く。左肩に杖を抱き、その上方には払子が括り付けてある。布袋は、弥勒菩薩の化身ともいわれ、古来、禅僧の水墨画に画題に取り上げられてきた。ふつうは、肥満の太鼓腹の体躯に、布の袋を杖で肩にかつぐ姿に描かれる。その図様によって、「踊布袋」「蹴鞠布袋」「午眠布袋」「指月布袋」「腹さすり布袋」「崖下布袋」「あくび布袋」「川渡り布袋」「寿布袋」など、さまざまな絵姿の遺墨が伝存する。が、このような袋を椅子代わりに休息する旅姿の布袋図は珍しい。本図は、中国・唐時代の画家・詩人として有名な王維（王摩結）の筆と伝える。確かな根拠に乏しいが、描写の様式などから元時代・14世紀の制作としておく。
