This is a fragment of calligraphy from a collection of one-hundred poems from The Tale of Genji and The Tale of Sagoromo compiled by FUJIWARA no Teika (1162–1241). In Newly Compiled Collection of Renowned Fragments of Calligraphy, FUJIWARA no Tameie (1198–1275) describes the Himeji Fragments as “poems from The Tale of Genji and The Tale of Sagoromo for a poetry contest in two lines each, on paper decorated with gold and silver,” and the name is thought to refer to the Sakai Family from the Himeji Domain, with which the fragments are associated. Since two holes can be found on most extant fragments, they were probably bound together as booklets. Nearly 30 fragments, all part of the first half of the collection, have been confirmed, suggesting that the fragments originally belonged to two booklets. The present fragment is inscribed with poem number 14 by Murasaki no ue from the ‘Suma’ chapter of The Tale of Genji on the left side. The character for “right” at the top of the left edge has been erased, and the unnatural margin stands out. The calligraphy of the Himeji fragments has been attributed to FUJIWARA no Tameie in an accompanying authentication. Although the calligraphy is not by Tameie, the style is similar and the calligraphy probably dates to the period when Tameie was active.

すまのうらにたてまつらせ給ける紫上うら人のしほくむそでにくらべみよなみぢへだつるよるのころもを
The One Hundred Poetry Pairs from the Tales of Genji and Sagoromo (compiled around 1206) contains a hundred pairs of poems matched against each other. On the left column are poems from the Genji Monogatari (Tale of Genji), and on the right, those from the Sagoromo Monogatari (Tale of Sagoromo). The poems were selected by Fujiwara-no-Sadaie (also Teika, 1162-1241). This segment is handwriting of the left poem No. 14. Originally, it was part of a square-shaped bound book. Highly decorative paper is crafted by torinoko (eggshell colored paper) ornamented with gold and silver dust and miniscule foils scattered to create cloud designs. It suggests that the original book was prepared as an ornament in a noble household. The ‘Himeji-gire’ segment name may be due to the fact the segment has been preserved by the Sakai Family, the lords of the Himeji Castle. It is attributed to the handwriting of Fujiwara-no-Tameie (1198-1275), Sadaie’s son, but without verification. The features of the paper and the calligraphic style are evidence that the original was a handwriting made in mid 13th century, or the Mid-Kamakura Period. It has priceless value as a preserved copy from the time of poetry selection by Fujiwara-no-Sadaie.
