Sutra (Buddhist Scriptures) tell that the world enters the period of mappo(end of the Buddha Law) after 2000 years following the death of the Buddha Shaka (Sakyamuni), the founder of Buddhism. The mappo concept inspired spread of jodo faith that belief in the Buddha Amida would promise happy rebirth in the jodo (Pure Land or Paradise) of Amida. Temples dedicated to Amida were built one after another. The jodo cult, on the other hand, cause the practice of making images of Amida in painting and to hang them in houses of the nobility. It shows at the center the Buddha Amida, attended by Kannon Bosatsu (Avalokitesvara) and Seishi Bosatsu (Mahasthamaprata) on his right and left. Kannon Holds in hands a lotus pedestal on which to carry the departed soul of the devotee to the Pure Land. It is a beautiful work of Buddhist art, richi in sublime, mysterious effect within the realm of delicate grace.
