地天は、万物を生育させる大地の徳を神格化した仏。密教における十二天の１つ。十二天は、もともと古代インドの神話の神々が密教に取り入れられて方位を守護する護法神となったもの。この地天は、下方を守護する役割をになう。独尊では、五穀豊穣・地鎮を祈る儀式に用いられる。 本図は、彩色の団華文が散らされる氍毹座（くゆざ。毛氈の座）の上に立ち、右手は掌を外に向け、左手には盛花器を持つ男神に描かれる。地天が男神にあらわされるのは十二天像の場合である。本図も教王護国寺・神護寺蔵の十二天屏風と同一の図像を示しており、本幅もまた十二天像の１幅であったことが分かる。十二天屏風は、密教の灌頂の儀式の際、阿闍梨の背後に立てて、魔障を取り除き、受者と儀式そのものを守護する意味を持つ。顔面や肉身に濃い朱の隈取（輪郭線にそって濃い彩色を塗る。陰影法のひとつ）を施し、衣紋の線には大様な線を用いる。それに比して面貌は細い柔軟な線で描かれおり、温和な表情を醸し出している。右上に描かれる蓮台に乗るのは地天の種子（梵字）である。
