絹地に極彩色で火天像を描く。火天は、もともと古代インド神話の神々の中のひとつで、火を象徴化した神。密教に採り入れられて方位を守護する十二天のうち、東南の守護神とされる。全身が深紅の火焔に包まれた、苦行老仙の姿に描かれる。この図は４臂につくられ、右手の一方は、三角壇（密教で降伏［悪魔を鎮める］護摩を修するときに設ける三角形の壇）を胸に当てる。もう片手は肘を挙げて掌を上に仰いで数珠を取る。左手の２本は、それぞれ澡瓶（手足を洗い浄めるための水を入れる容器）と仙杖を持つ。鋭い線描、荘重な色彩は、平安時代の絵仏師の面目を遺憾なく発揮するものである。
