毘沙門天は、仏教世界の中心にそびえる須弥山の四方を護る四天王のうち、北方を守護する善神とある。四天王像の１尊、あるいは十二天の１尊として制作されることが多い。四天王中の最強の神、また現世利益の功徳を得る神として信仰を集め、彫刻・仏画にあらわされた。ふつう、独尊の場合を毘沙門天、四天王のひとつとしては多聞天と呼ばれる。厳めしさを象徴するかのごとく、忿怒相で甲冑を身につけた武将形にあらわされる。本図は、右手に宝棒を持って腰に当て、左手の掌上には宝塔を乗せる。ふつうは邪鬼の上に立つ姿に描かれるが、本幅では、氍毺座（毛氈の座）の上に立っている。教王護国寺蔵の十二天屏風と共通するところから、これも十二天のうちの１図ではなかったか。剥落が惜しいが、華麗に装飾された荘厳美は保っている。描法・色調から鎌倉時代最末期の作品であろう。
