趙陶斎〈ちょうとうさい・1713-86〉は、江戸時代中期の書家。長崎に生まれる。もとは中国の商人の子という。名は養、字は仲頤、陶斎はその号。早くに父母を喪い、長崎在住の中国僧・竺庵禅師〈じくあん・1699-1756〉に養育され、出家し竺庵について宇治の万福寺に移ったが、わけあって28歳の時に還俗、薩摩から奥羽まで諸国を歴遊、晩年は泉州堺に居住、丸薬を売りながら生計を立てていたという。一方において、能書の才に恵まれ、また山水画・篆刻にもすぐれ、多くの支持者を得ていたともいう。この「花有清香月有陰」（花には清香有り、月には陰有り）は、宋の詩人・蘇東坡〈そとうば・1036-1101〉の七言絶句「春夜」の一句を一行に書写したもの。これに対応する上の句は、古来言い慣わされていた「春宵一刻値千金」（春の宵の一時は、千金の値がある）の句。春の花は清らかな香りを利かせ、月はおぼろにかすんでいると、春の自然描写を美しく詠んでいる。文字に大小の変化をつけて、自在に筆を操る。能書の面目躍如たる作品である。中国の明清の書法が歴然としている。
