高島秋帆〈たかしましゅうはん・1798-1866〉は長崎出身の砲術家、兵学者。名は舜臣（きみおみ）、字を茂敦（しげよし）、号を秋帆（のちに喜平〔きへい〕）という。蘭書を集め、西洋砲術に関心を持ち、各種武器も収集しながら研究を深め、高島流砲術を完成。阿片戦争（あへんせんそう・1840～42）ののち幕府に洋式砲術の採用を進言した。が、認められず、ねたむ者の讒言により蟄居に刑される。しかし、ペリー来航を契機に解放され、晩年は幕府の軍事顧問として重要な役割を果たした。もともと「弄玉（ろうぎょく）」とは、単に宝石のような美しい玉をもてあそぶの意と、中国古代・秦代の穆公のむすめで、簫（笛）の名手で聞こえた才女の名の義がある。が、日本では、ふつう「品玉（しなだま）」と書いて、いくつもの玉や鎌・毬などを空中に投げてお手玉のような曲芸を指す語で知られる。巧みに人の目をごまかすことから手品の意味に使われた。そして、「品玉も種から」といった、何事も材料がなければできない意味の常套句まで生まれている。秋帆がこの二字をいかなる意図で書いたかは不明。みずからが志向した砲術に通暁すべき思いをこめたものか。墨痕淋漓、堂々とした筆運びである。「庚申春日」の款記から、秋帆63歳の筆と知れる。
