佐藤一斎〈さとういっさい・1772-1859〉は江戸後期の儒者。美濃岩村藩家老・佐藤伸由（のぶより）の二男。はじめ、名は信行、通称幾久蔵であったが、21歳の時、名を坦（たいら）、通称を捨蔵に改めた。字は大道（だいどう）、一斎は号。藩主松平乗薀〈まつだいらのりもり・1716-83〉の子が、江戸幕府で重用された儒者の林述斎〈はやしじゅっさい・1768-1841〉であるという縁で、早くから述斎に仕えた。大学頭を継いだ述斎を助け、林家の塾長、幕府の儒官として儒学の普及に努めた。朱子学を奉ずる林家に籍をおくが、若い頃学んだ陽明学にも関心があり、陽朱陰王といわれた。幼少の頃より、読書を好み、書をよくし、刀槍・射騎など文武にわたり優秀であったという。この書「道理、只是れ眼前の道理」は一斎が亡くなる前年（87歳）に書かれたものである。が、その筆致は力強く、気概が込められた筆勢である。「道理」の追究がかれの信念であったのであろう。迫力ある書に、晩年における執念を見る思いである。
