北島雪山〈きたじませつざん・1636-97〉は、江戸時代前期の書家。江戸時代の唐様書道の祖といわれる。肥後熊本の人。名は三立、号は雪山、また別号に花谿子（かけいし）・蘭隠立（らんいんりゅう）など。幼時、兄（あるいは父とも）に従って長崎に赴き、陽明学を修め、折しも来朝中の黄檗僧・独立性易〈どくりゅうしょうえき・1596-1672〉から撥鐙法（執筆法のひとつ）を、また明の遺民・愈立徳〈ゆりっとく・生没年未詳〉から文徴明〈ぶんちょうめい・1470-1559〉の筆法を授けられた、という。その後、熊本藩細川家に仕えたが、やがて江戸に出て、書家として名をあげた。門人に細井広沢〈ほそいこうたく・1658-1736〉がいる。晩年は長崎に戻り、62歳で没した。豪放磊落、無類の酒好きで、多くの逸話を残している。その書は、中国書法に立脚した確かな筆法ながら、法にとらわれない独自の新境地を開いており、きわめて格調高い。
