伊藤仁斎〈いとうじんさい・1627-1705〉は江戸時代の儒者。古学堀川学派の祖。名は維楨（これえだ）。敬斎、仁斎と号す。京都の商家に生まれ、幼少のころより学問を志し、朱子学を学んだ。のち、孔子、孟子の原典にあたり、儒学本来の思想と考えられるものを独学で体系づけ、その学問を「古学」と称した。寛文２年〈1662〉、京都堀川の自宅で私塾古義堂（こぎどう）を開き、長男の東涯〈とうがい・1670-1736〉や稲生若水〈いのうじゃくすい・1655-1715〉らの弟子を育成し、儒学思想の普及・定着に大きな功績を残した。中国の古典『書経』の「君陳」に見える「我聞曰、至治馨香、感于神明、黍稷非馨、明徳維馨」（我聞くに曰く、至治の馨香は神明を感ぜしむ。黍稷（きび）馨しきに非ず、明徳維れ馨し）の一節。周公の遺訓として成王が述べたもの。「最高の政治が放つ良い香りは、神をも感動させるもの。その神の感動は御供え物の多い少ないによるものではない。同時に、神は御供えをかんばしいものとして喜ぶわけではない。供える人々の、神に対する明徳をかんばしいとして喜びと感じるもの。人の明徳ほど神を喜ばせるものはない」の意。堂々とした重厚な筆致に儒家としての誇りを感じる。
