Hirano Chuan (years of birth and death unknown) was a Kyoto-born calligrapher of the early Edo Period. Trained under Shokado Shojo (1584-1639), Chuan was later hailed as one of the highest-achieving Shokado School disciples. (This school was also called Takimoto School.) Chuan wrote Japanese phonetic syllabary of kana skillfully. According to Takimoto Shiori (Takimoto School biography and episodes: pub. 1796), connoisseurs and collectors would often mistake Chuan’s works with those of his master, Shojo. In Exhibit, 13 Chinese poems are copied, one after another, on undecorated washi paper. The first poem is quoted from Tao Yeoming’s (Jp. Toh Enmei; 365-427) “Miscellaneous Poems.” The next 12 poems are quoted from the two-volume Wakan Roeishu (Anthology of Japanese Chinese Poems for Recitation). Chinese and Japanese poems are written alternately. The writer’s note says this brushwork was written in July of 1650. The powerful flow of the brush suggests this Shokado-style masterpiece was written in Chuan’s prime years.
