Hirano Chuan (years of birth and death unknown) was a Kyoto-born calligrapher of the early Edo Period. Trained under Shokado Shojo (1584-1639), Chuan was later hailed as one of the highest-achieving Shokado School disciples. (This school was also called Takimoto School.) Chuan wrote Japanese phonetic syllabary of kana skillfully. According to Takimoto Shiori (Takimoto School biography and episodes: pub. 1796), connoisseurs and collectors would often mistake Chuan’s works with those of his master, Shojo. Quotations from two calligraphy textbooks, Unshu Orai (lit. Letters from Unshu. “Unshu” is today’s Shimane Prefecture) and Junigatsu Orai (lit. Letters for Twelve Months). Many Orai exemplars were published from the Kamakura through Muromachi periods, collecting exemplary letters. They were often used to teach calligraphy to children and women of noble households and sometimes the general public. Obviously, the exhibit was produced for such a purpose. The refined brushstrokes do much honor to the Shokado School tradition. The writer’s note at the scroll’s end states that this piece was written on August 25, 1672.
