This album consists of 36 shikishi (decorated square paper) pairs, with a painting of one of the Thirty-Six Poets on the right shikish and a representative waka composed by that poet on the left shikishi. The shikishi pairs are then bound together into an album. The painting style indicates that they were likely rendered by Sumiyoshi Jokei (1599-1670). The shikishi is made of gorgeously decorated kumogami with silver and gold drawings of grass and flowers, flowing streams, butterflies and birds. All 36 sheets have the same under-painting. The person commissioning this decorated album must have first had the 36 sheets prepared, then distributed them to his favorite calligraphers, who were all aristocrats. Their surnames and official titles are shown on the tanzaku strips attached to each shikishi’s top-right corner. Examining the tenure of official posts of all of the writers, we know that this album was produced in 1677. The 36 calligraphers’ names appear below. The figures in brackets are their ages at the time of this production.
