17世紀のころには、城郭や書院造など、大きな建築物が次々に建てられていた。その床の棚飾には、書をかいた巻物が迎えられた。本阿弥光悦〈ほんあみこうえつ・1558-1637〉は、刀剣の家に生まれたが、とりわけ能書であった。好んで、巻物に揮毫の筆をとった。これはそうした巻物の一部分。雲母を粉末にした顔料で、木版であらわした竹の模様を印刷している。薄・草花・松・鶴・蝶など、さまざまな大柄な図柄が連続する。その上に、リズミカル、かつダイナミックな筆を展開している。光悦の真面目（しんめんもく）を発揮するもの。「ちりぬればにほひばかりをむめ（梅）のはな有とや袖にはる風ぞ吹」（『新古今集』巻第一・春）が書かれている。
