Ozawa Roan (1723-1801) was an Osaka-born poet and waka scholar of the later Edo Period. While studying under a noble, Reizei Tamemura (1712-1774), Roan was expelled from the school for deviating from the teacher’s poetic style (Traditional poetic secrets like poem interpretations were revealed strictly through master-student relationship.) The proponent of poem writing using correct, plain styles without overt artificiality and true to the spirit expressed in the preface of the aforementioned anthology, Roan was later hailed as one of the “Four Kings of Heian-Style Poetry” along with Chogetsu (1714-1798), Ban Kokei (1733-1806) and Priest Jien (1748-1805).By collecting classic anthologies from the Heian Period, Roan compared different versions and annotated them carefully. He was particularly devoted to studying Ki-no-Tsurayuki (794–1185) and committed to memory the anthology Kokin Waka Rokujo, said to have been edited by Ki-no-Tsurayuki.This exhibit is a piece from Roan’s Rokujo Eiso (pub. 1811, containing 1,950 poems. This edition was named after Ki-no-Tsurayuki’s Kokin Waka Rokujo anthology.)
