国家事業として行われた奈良時代の写経は、平安時代に入ると次第に皇族・有力氏族主導に変化する。同時に写経の目的が、故人の追善の滅罪菩提・極楽往生の欣求、あるいは現世における利益へと変貌する。そこで、「写経功徳」や「女人成仏」を説く『法華経』を信仰する「法華信仰」が貴族の中に流行、さらには永承７年〈1052〉を末法第１年とする仏教観念から起こった末法思想による浄土信仰にともなって『法華経』の書写や浄土関係の経典の写経が盛んになる。このような背景のもと、仏国土を象徴する瑠璃（紺）・金などの七宝を使った紺紙金字の写経が多く行われた。たとえば、平安時代後期から鎌倉時代初期にかけては、紺紙金字の一切経の遺品も多い（「中尊寺経」「荒川経」「神護寺経」等々）。この「紺紙金字法華経断簡」もかような仏教信仰の所産である。平安時代末期の書風を示す。能書の結縁者みずからが自筆にて書写したものであろうか。「薬王本事品第二十三」の部分で、１巻の中の１紙分に相当する。
