Tsuda Bensaku (years of birth and death unknown) was a samurai warrior serving the Ogasawara Household. While he used the common name Bensaku, his real name was Yoshiharu. He studied calligraphy writing and painting under Konoe Nobutada (1565-1614) and is said to have reached aesthetic heights developed by the Konoe School. The school’s style came to be called by later aficionados as Sanmyaku-In School. Konoe Nobutada, the originator of this unique style, attracted many followers, mostly aristocrats. A samurai calligrapher like Bensaku was a rarity. The portrait of Kakinomoto-no-Hitomaro (the ancient poet who was later consecrated as one of the protecting gods of waka poetry composition,) was framed and hung by offering incense at poetry parties as an object of worship. This custom became popular during the Heian Period. In Exhibit C, however, Bensaku merely wrote two large characters denoting “Hitomaru,” instead of his portrait, and wrote his poem above it.

On the slowly dawning Akashi Bay, the dissipating morning fog reveals a boat disappearing behind an island. I’m filled with awe.
