Suminokura Soan (1571-1632) was one of the wealthy Kyoto merchants of the early Edo Period, who ran several businesses in transportation, civil engineering, warehousing and merchandise trade, succeeding to his father Ryoi (1554-1614). The amassed wealth enabled Soan to enjoy the leisurely pursuit of Chanoyu (the art of tea) and Noh (drama, dance and singing) as a wealthy townsman, cultivating friendships with artists and celebrities of his time. Soan was well-educated in Chinese and Japanese classics and was respected as a man of refined taste. Thanks to a friendship with Hon-ami Koetsu, Soan’s brushwork was hailed highly as one of the best Koetsu-style renditions of the time. During the latter Keicho and Genna eras, Soan, between his 30s and 50s, worked tirelessly to publish printed books of the so-called “Saga-Bon” series, the luxurious editions using paint blocks developed on Koetsu’s designs. The Saga-Bon used strong and smooth torinoko paper decorated with pampas grass, podocarp and silver grass patterned on the paper with white mica.A series of six such artistically decorated shikishi were bound together on which poems from Kokin Wakashu (Collection of Ancient and Modern Japanese Poems, Vol. 9) are copied in a scattered script. The master’s brush flows without restriction across the paper, resulting in a piece of art hard to distinguish from those of Koetsu’s own making. The exhibited piece is a testimony to Soan’s reputation as one of the best Koetsu-style calligraphers.
I’ve spent the whole day hunting. I’ll now ask the Weaving Princess for an overnight accommodation as the nearby stream is called Heavenly River. The Princess has a lover who visits her but once a year, so she may not accommodate me.

As a prototype feature, the Keio Object Hub uses AI (machine learning) to generate keywords for searches and filtering.
For the first launch, Google Cloud's Vision API will be used to analyze the images of each object and automatically generate keywords.
