谷文晁〈たにぶんちょう・1763-1840〉は江戸後期の文人画家。姓は大伴、通称を文五郎、直右衛門という。はじめ文朝、のち文晁に改める。狩野派の絵師加藤文麗に絵を習い、のち渡辺玄対（わたなべげんたい）に入門して、南宋画を学ぶ。田安家に仕え、松平定信〈まつだいらさだのぶ・1758-1829〉が老中首座になると定信付きとなり重用される。生涯を通じて多くの模写に精励して、わが国の大和絵をはじめ狩野派、土佐派、住吉派から、さらに中国画・西洋画の手法を徹底的に研究し、自らの画風を作り上げ、江戸画壇の重鎮となった。文晁には『本朝画纂』『文晁画談』などの画論があり、詩文においても才能を示した。この一幅も、画を描く際の心得を説いた画論の一節と思われる。この独特の筆致、筆法が文晁の真骨頂である。「絵の月は其の光を絵く能わず。絵の雪は其の清らを絵く能わず。絵の花は其の香を絵く能わず」
