A bound book of decorated squarepieces of paper, or shikishi, was obviously produced with painstaking planning and production. First, shikishi had to be made to the same specifications and then distributed to the client’s favorite calligraphers to copy representative poems of the “Thirty-Six Poets”. After this, the commissioned brushworks needed to be collected and bound together. Aficionados would go to great lengths to produce masterpieces! From the tags attached to the top right corner showing each calligrapher’s tenure of office, we can learn that this fine piece of art was completed in 1757. In that year, 36 calligraphers, among whom the most well-known included the Minister of the Left, Konoe Uchisaki (aged 30), Niwata Shigehiro (aged 41), the Provisional Major Counsellor (aged 41), Sanjo Kinzane (aged 37) of the same post, Karasumaru Mitsutane (aged 37), again of the same post, and 32 other writers contributed to the production. The indigo-dyed paper is decorated with gold-mud underpainting, over which each calligrapher copied a poem of his favorite poet.
