Emperor GoKashiwabara (1464-1526) was born the first prince of Emperor GoTsuchimikado (1442-1500) and held the throne between 1500 and 1526. With the Onin War (1467-77) raging in the nation’s capital, celebrations for Emperor GoKashiwabara’s enthronement were postponed until 20 years later. Nonetheless, the emperor endeavored to restore imperial authority undermined during the war and reinstate traditional formalities and ceremonies. He was also remembered for personally hand-copying the Heart Sutra (Jp. Hannya Shingyo) and dedicating the manuscripts to Enryakuji and Ninnaji temples as a prayer offering for the peace and safety of his subjects. Academically inclined and well-trained in music and poetry composition, the emperor left behind a collection of poems, the Hakugyoku-Shu (lit. Collection of Oak Gems; Note that “oak” is “kashiwa” in Japanese.), in addition to his Private Diary of Emperor GoKashiwabara. A skilled calligrapher, the emperor was admired also as the originator of the new GoKashiwabara-In School, patterned after the Son-en School (also known as the Shoren-In School). This tanzaku only shows various poem titles. It seems the emperor used the tanzaku merely to demonstrate the rules about how to divide four-character poem titles into sections when writing them at the top of a tanzaku strip.
