Nijo Tametada (1310-73) was the third son of Middle Counselor Tamefuji (1275-1324). As such, he was Tameyo (1250-1338)’s grandson and Tamefuyu (?-1335)’s nephew. He went to serve at the court of the Southern Dynasty and was promoted to the ranks of chamberlain, Lieutenant General of the Left, and Junior General of the Left, but later, he switched allegiance to the Northern Dynasty, where he was made Provisional Middle Counselor in 1367. Despite his famed Nijo Family lineage, he was not affected and served as an instructor of conventional poetry at the Southern Court. His poems, nonetheless, were outstanding and were selected for inclusion in Fuga Wakashu (Fuga Collection of Japanese Poems) and the Shinyo Wakashu (New Collection of Leaves), both compiled by the Southern Court, and also in the Shin Go-Shui Wakashu (New Later Collection of Gleanings of Japanese Poetry) and Shin Shoku Kokin Wakashu (New Sequel to the Collection of Ancient and Modern Japanese Poems ), which were compiled by the Northern Court. As such, he was one of the very few poets acclaimed by both of the opposing dynasties. The poems seen here are written on undecorated paper in the Hosshoji style. The thick and bold lines speak of the Tametada’s fortitude, as does his verse.
Ominaeshi Blooms: Attracted by the alluring names of small autumn flowers, I’ve come to the fields covered with them, and now I cannot leave.
