公式な歌会では懐紙に和歌を記したが、通常の会や私的な会では紙を細長く切った短冊（たんざく）が使用された。平安の記録に見えるが、現存するのは鎌倉後期からである。古くは素紙の白短冊であったが、室町初期から上に藍、下に紫を漉き加えた雲紙（くもがみ）を公式料紙として用いるようになった。これは、大ぶりの折帖に、表に264枚、裏に269枚の計533枚もの短冊を貼り込んでいる。鎌倉後期から江戸初期に及び、数枚の漢詩と発句もある。筆跡の見本集を「手鑑（てかがみ）」と呼ぶが、これほど大きな短冊手鑑は類を見ない。通常の手鑑は、筆者の身分と時代で貼り並べるが、桐箱蓋に「上之短冊次第不同ニ押」と墨書されるように、その法則は守られていない。加賀前田家旧蔵と伝えられ、足利将軍他の著名人の短冊が多く、筆跡の様々はもとより、多彩な様式の短冊を見いだせる。格の高い雲鶴文の古錦を用いた表紙も見事である。（佐々木孝浩）
