中院通勝〈なかのいんみちかつ・1556-1610〉は、右大臣通為（みちため）の子。正三位・権中納言に至る。叔父にあたる内大臣三条西実枝〈さんじょうにしさねき・1511-79〉を師と仰ぎ、和歌・国学を学んだ。天正８年〈1580〉正親町天皇〈おおぎまちてんのう・1517-93〉の勅勘を蒙り、丹後国（京都府北部）に追放されるが、その地において田辺城主・細川幽斎〈ほそかわゆうさい・1534-1610〉から古今伝授を受け、歌道の秘奥を極める。天正14年〈1586〉31歳で出家、素然（そねん）と号す。慶長４年〈1599〉許されて帰洛。著書『眠江入楚（みんごうにっそ）』は、『源氏物語』の諸注釈書の集大成として特筆すべきものである。通勝は、曽祖父三条西実隆〈さねたか・1455-1537〉を祖とする三条流に属する。数多い三条流の書き手の中でも、力強い字で筆法の確かな能書である。「素然」の署名により、この短冊は出家後31歳以降の筆跡とわかる。この歌は、家集『通勝集』（冬部）に収められている。
