Toki Yorinari (1501-82) was a military general who lived during the Warring Era (Jp. Sengoku Jidai) in Japan’s Middle Ages. He was the son of Toki Masafusa, the provincial governor of Mino Province, where the family lived at Sagiyama Castle in Katagata. Later, however, General Saito Dosan (1494-1556) revolted against Yorinari’s elder brother, Toki Masayori, driving the Toki Family head from his domain. This made Yorinari the new head of the Toki Clan, and upon Saito Dosan’s backing, Yorinari moved to Oga Castle. However, a feud arose between Dosan and Yorinari, which forced him to serve Lord Oda Nobuhide (1511-51) of Owari Province. In 1552, Saito Dosan pursued and drove Yorinari away from Mino, pushing the provincial governor Toki’s household to extinction. Yorinari survived the collapse of his family legacy and found a safe haven in the household of Inaba Ittetsu (1515-89) in 1582, his former general. He lived in Kire Village, Ono County (today’s Kire in Tanigumi Village, Ibi County, Gifu Prefecture) but died of an illness at age 82 in the same year. The tanzaku is signed “Muneyoshi”, so it was written in Yorinari’s last years. The calmness in the softly-flowing brushwork is a testimony to the solace this warlord finally found after decades of constant wars and upheavals. The poem title was written by a different hand.
Withered Winter Plants on the Fence: The fence divides, but it cannot prevent spring from coming. There is less frost on the ground than mid-winter, under which winter grass lies dying.
