The son of Asukai Masatoshi (1462-1523), Masatsune (1489-1563) became Provisional Major Counselor in 1538, and was named to Junior First Grade at age 50. He turned to Buddhism in 1563 and took up the Buddhist name Koga. However, he died shortly afterward at age 75. The Asukais produced waka teachers and football (kemari) instructors for generations. The members of this family also were all noted calligraphers, and Masatsune belonged to the Eiga School, inheriting the style adopted by his grandfather Masachika. The tanzaku below show characteristics of this school.
