Murata Juko (1423-1502) was a tea connoisseur of the latter Muromachi Period. Originally, a disciple at Shomyoji Temple in Nara, he went up to Kyoto to practice Zen under Priest Ikkyu Sojun of Daitokuji Temple. He was fascinated by tea drinking, a then growing fad among Edo’s townspeople, while also attracted to the more elegant and aristocratic ways of serving and drinking tea at the shogun’s households. By integrating the ways of serving tea and the spirit of Zen, Juko formed the prototype of what was later to become the art of tea ceremony. This tanzaku shows a copy of a poem on paper decorated with cloud-like patterns colored with indigo and purplish pigments. The well-balanced brushstrokes with stable movement speak of the cultural training Juko had attained. The piece is extremely valuable as one of the rare and authentic surviving tanzaku by him.

Mountains in the Dawn: I wish to tread deeper into the mountains to hear the chanting of sutra at the old temple, with the echoes filling the dawning sky.
