Prince Sada-atsu (1488-1572) was the sixth-generation heir of the Fushimino-Miya royal family and the first son of the fifth-generation heir, Prince Kunitaka. He celebrated his initiation ceremony in December 1502, being adopted by Emperor GoKashiwabara, and was declared an imperial prince in February 1504. Three years later, he was appointed Minister of Central Affairs, and then Minister of Ceremonial Affairs in 1517. When Prince Kunitaka became a monk in that same year, Prince Sada-atsu inherited the Fushimino-Miya name. Five years later, he was promoted to Second Rank but became a monk in 1544, adopting the Buddhist name of Choku. He died at age 85 in 1572. Prince Sada-atsu showed musical talent in the biwa (Japanese lute), playing as well as he wrote waka. He was also an achieved calligrapher of the GoKashiwabara-In School, patterned after his adopted father’s writing style. This tanzaku signed “Sada-atsu” was written sometime in the 40 years between when he was named an imperial prince (at age 17) and when he entered the Buddhist order (age 57).

Mist: In the spring mist, fishermen on their little boats are harvesting seaweed. In the distance lies Hatsushima Island (in Osaka or Wakayama Prefecture).
