世界の始まりを活写するイニシャル
本書は、古事好事家、聖職者、出版者、法律家などが執筆・編纂にかかわったエリザベス朝を代表するイギリス国史の共同出版事業、通称ホリンシェッドの『年代記』の第2版である。シェイクスピアが種本として用いたことでも知られる。初版は1577年に刊行された。主編者ホリンシェッドの没後、1586年までの記述が加わり改訂増補され、1587年にこの第2版が出版された（松田『寓意』no. 65）。展示ページはアイルランド史の巻頭であるが、本文冒頭を大型の絵入りイニシャルが飾り、コンパスを使って天球儀を測量する天文学者の姿が描かれている（松田『寓意』no. 4）。この表象は、コンパスを手にして世界を創造した神（God the Creator with a compass）のイコノグラフィーの伝統（Friedman参照）に依拠していると思われる。
ホリンシェッドの『年代記』第２版は、エリザベス女王の命により検閲を受け、大幅な改稿を余儀なくされた。このためキャンセルページが多く、異刷も多数あり複雑である（Clegg）。このため今回は欠葉を記録するに留めた。慶應本のさらなる調査が待たれる。（ST）
