手彩色の木版イニシャル
ミサ典書（Missal）は教会の典礼儀式で使用される書物で、司式司祭とその補佐役が唱える式文を収めている。本書は、通常のミサ典礼書の内容である暦や祝日と週日の固有文などに加えて、司祭がひとりで唱う先唱句の楽譜が付いた「典譜付きミサ典書」（Noted Missal）である。
物語イニシャルで始まる本文は、教会暦では新年の始まりとなる降待節第1主日（12月25日の降誕祭から4週前の主日）の入祭唱（イントロイトゥス）で、「主よ、私の魂はあなたを仰ぎ望み／わたしの神よ、あなたに依り頼みます」と始まる『詩篇』25(Vulg. 24): 1−4の引用である。木版による物語イニシャル ‘A’のなかに描かれているのは、中世において『詩篇』の作者とされたダヴィデ王（王冠をかぶっている）の祈りを捧げる姿で、足下にはアトリビュートの竪琴がおかれている。下段には、所有者の紋章が描きこまれている。16世紀初頭に印刷された典礼書や時禱書では、木版の挿絵に手彩色をほどこすことは珍しくないが、本書は大型のフォリオ版であるために、特にその鮮やかさが目立っている。本書はリヨンの大聖堂図書館に4部(そのうち完本は2部)、ヨークの大聖堂図書館に1部現存するのみで、極めて希少である。（TM）
