ジャン・フーケの様式の物語イニシャル
この零葉はロワール川流域のおそらくトゥールで制作されたと思われる。復活のキリストが描かれた6行分の高さの物語イニシャル ‘Q’は、赤地に金のカマイユ（単色画法）で描かれている。これは、あらかじめ単色で塗られた表面に液体の金の細い平行線で陰影をつけることで形を構成する技法で、トゥール出身の画家ジャン・フーケ（Jean Foucquet, c. 1420–c. 1481）はこの線影を多用して、服の襞や髪に金彩を与えている。手法自体は15世紀初めにパリで誕生したが、トゥールでフーケが復活させ、世紀後半にフランスの主要都市へと広がっていったとされる。
物語イニシャル ‘Q’で始まる本文は｢キリストの昇天｣の祝日の朗読で、ローマ教皇グレゴリウス１世（Gregorius I, 540?–604）の説教（29番）からの引用である。主がお生まれになったときに顕れた天使が白い衣服を纏っていたと書かれていない一方で、主が昇天されたときに遣わされた天使が白を纏っていたのは何故かを問わねばならない、という内容で、『使徒言行録』1. 9–10のイエスの昇天の記述に対応している。手を広げて光を放つイエスの姿は、｢キリストの変容｣（『マタイによる福音書』17:1–8）のイコノグラフィーを想起させるが、文脈を考慮するならば、この図像は昇天するイエスを意図していると考えられる。いずれにせよ本文を意識したイコノグラフィーであることには相違ない。(TM)
