物語イニシャルとグロテスクな欄外装飾
『詩篇』141篇冒頭の4行分の高さの物語イニシャル‘D’のなかに棍棒をもった野人と乙女の姿が描かれ、ドラゴンのアンテナ装飾が余白に伸びている。さらに欄外には、赤と青のペン線描による異形の生物が描かれている。典礼書の物語イニシャルや欄外装飾には、しばしば本文とは一見全く無関係な、世俗的でときに冒涜的ともうつるモチーフが用いられる。なかでも空想上のキメラ的生物は好まれたレパートリーで、グリルュス、バブインなどと称される半人半獣の生物たちが典礼書や時禱書の欄外余白に描かれ、敬虔な祈祷文の周縁を埋めている。こうしたモチーフは純粋に装飾として用いられているものだが、しかし、中心の聖なる世界（ラテン語の典礼文）を周囲から、ときにそこに闖入するかのように取り囲む異形の存在は、現世は、さまざまなものが作り出す差異と多様性によって完成すべく意図されているという、中世的世界観の表現ともいえる。(TM)
