英国における２色刷りの嚆矢
印刷揺籃期において、複数色のインクを使った印刷には高度の技術を要した。展示書は英国初の2色刷りできわめて画期的な試みである。本文は黒字で印刷され、木版イニシャルやパラフマーク、図版のキャプションなどに赤色が使われた。出版地はロンドンから北に位置するセント・オールバンズである。キャクストンが英国初の印刷所をウェストミンスターで始動したのは1476年頃で、セント・オールバンズの印刷はオックスフォードに次いで英国で3番目と早い。
展示書の活字（Type 2B）は、キャクストンのバタルド体活字（Type 2）をもとに彫られた父型から作られた活字（Type 2A）を再鋳造したもの。木版イニシャルの多くもキャクストンのものに基づく（BMC XI, pp. 413–16）。セント・オールバンズの印刷は、ド・ウォード版『年代記』（STC 9996）の刊記にある「学校教師による」ものと考えられてきた。だがL・ヘリンガは、ベネディクト会修道院内で行われたこと、また1480–81年刊行のラテン語著作と、1486年の英書2点（本書を含む）の印刷は異なる人物による可能性を示している。一方P・ニーダムは、紙の透し模様の証拠から、本書は編纂も印刷も1483年頃に行われたとしている（BMC XI, pp. 18–19; 321）。
慶應本は欠葉や損傷が著しく、失われた本文は19世紀（？）に手書きで補われている。そうしたページには「完本」を目指した当時の愛書家の心性が窺がわれる。(ST)
