古筆了佐〈こひつりょうさ・1572-1662〉は、桃山～江戸時代初期にかけて活躍した古筆鑑定家。近江国西川（滋賀県彦根市）に生まれる。本姓は平沢、名を範佐（のりすけ）、通称弥四郎。後年、京に出て麩屋（ふや）と号し、出家後、了佐を法号とした。近衛前久〈このえさきふさ・1536-1612〉や烏丸光広〈からすまるみつひろ・1579-1638〉に和歌や古筆の鑑定を学び、茶人としてもひとかどの人物であった。やがて古筆鑑定を業とすべく、幕府から古筆の姓を賜わり、古筆家の祖となる。豊臣秀次〈とよとみひでつぐ・1568-95〉からは、鑑定の証印に捺す「琴山（きんざん）」号の金印を拝領、代々これを極印（きわめいん）として用いた。了佐の朴納とした書風には、禅宗僧侶の書の影響が見てとれる。この短冊の詞書に見える「玄琢」は、江戸時代前期の医師野間玄琢（のまげんたく）のこと。曲直瀬玄朔〈まなせげんさく・1549-1631〉に医術を学び、法橋・法眼・法印に叙される。徳川秀忠〈とくがわひでただ・1579-1632〉の侍医をつとめ、東福門院〈とうふくもんいん＝徳川和子・1607-78。秀忠娘〉の治療にもあたった名医として知られる。
