中院通茂〈なかのいんみちしげ・1631-1710〉は、権大納言通純〈みちずみ・1612-53〉の子。権中納言を経て、30歳で権大納言となる。宝永元年〈1704〉内大臣となるが、わずか３日で致仕。位階は従一位を極め、同７年〈1710〉３月21日、80歳で没した。徳川光圀〈とくがわみつくに・1628-1700〉との親交が知られる。また、祖父通村〈みちむら・1588-53〉・父通純を受け継いで和歌を能くし、寛文４年〈1664〉には後水尾上皇〈ごみずのおじょうこう・1596-1680〉から古今伝授を受け、歌壇の中心人物として活躍した。父祖継承の中院（なかのいん）流の書風を展開、巧みな連綿に流暢な運筆が見事である。歌題は別筆。
