A descendant of famed Heian Period poet Sugawara-no-Michizane, Higashibojo Akinaga (years of birth and death unknown) was the second son of Karahashi Aritoyo but was later adopted by Higashibojo Nagamasa. Both the Karahashi and Higashibojo families were keepers of Confucian academism, a profession Akinaga also inherited. In his public career, Akinaga also was appointed Consultant, in 1468, but resigned only five years later. The tanzaku presented here is written on paper decorated with indigo and purple-dyed cloud patterns. The brushstrokes belong to those of the Imperial Writing School, popular during the Muromachi Period, even though there are some bold departures. The poem title “Winter Topography” is obviously written by a different hand and is attributed to Emperor GoTsuchimikado according to the appreciators’ certification attached to the tanzaku.

Winter Topography: Winter winds blowing across the waters of Mano Bay (in Soma County, Fukushima Prefecture) – they may soon lock the pampas grass in ice.
